New Alstom tramway for Dubai : A consortium formed by Alstom, Besix and Serco has been awarded an EUR 500 M contract to design, build and operate the first phase of a new tramline by the government of the gulf Emirate of Dubai, with an option for phase 2.

The project is planned to open in 2011 and in total involves 14 km of street-based tramway with 19 stops worked by 25 Alstom Citadis 402 low-floor trams. For the first time outside France the Alstom-developed APS surface current collection system (pioneered in Bordeaux) will be used on the whole length of the new line.

Because of the high temperatures and humidity in Dubai, the stops will be fully-enclosed with air conditioning and platform doors that open when the tram is alongside, another tramway first.
