:
The results of tendering for the new train and tram service contracts were announced by the Victorian government on 25 June and saw both incumbent operators, Connex Trains (Veolia-led consortium) and Yarra Trams (Transdev/Transfield) losing their contracts in favour of Metro Trains Melbourne (a subsidiary of Hong Kong's MTR) to run the local trains and Keolis Downer EDI (a consortium of the French SNCF subsidiary Keolis and the Australian Downer EDI) to run the tramway network, both from December 2009. Yarra Trams has been running the tramway system since 1999 (part) and 2004 (whole network).
