'Buy America' tram unveiled in Portland

The US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood attended the formal unveiling of United Streetcar's prototype 10 T3 tram in Portland on July 1. United Streetcar is a subsidiary of defence contractor Oregon Iron Works Inc, which has developed the light rail vehicle to be comply with the 'Buy America' requirement for 60% domestic content for trams purchased with federal funding.
The 10 T3 was developed under a technology transfer agreement with Skoda, and is a local version of the Czech tram manufacturer's 10T cars, seven of which are already in service in Portland. Subject to approval trams of this type will be ordered by Portland and Tucson.
