Midland Metro extensions approval : Plans to run Midland Metro trams through Birmingham and Wolverhampton city centres, have been backed by the government, These proposed extensions to the tramway were among a series of major transport improvement schemes for the metropolitan area between now and 2014 that the West Midlands had asked the Department for Transport to help support with GBP 154 million of funding.

Subject to acceptable business cases for the projects, the DfT has agreed to put GBP 25 million towards the GBP 55m cost of extending the Metro from Snow Hill Station to New Street Station and GBP 53m towards the estimated GBP 70m cost of the Wolverhampton Loop extension and up to 25 new longer trams for the Metro system

Also included were longer term plans to link the existing Midland Metro at Wednesbury to Stourbridge via Merry Hill and Brierley Hill using tram-train technology.
