POLICY — Headlines

• LRTA advocates integrated urban public transport which is:
  • Reliable
  • Safe
  • Cost-effective
  • Accessible to all
  • Environmentally sustainable
• Tramways/light rail have a major role in cities in high-demand corridors
• Tramways/light rail are particularly well-suited to providing an integrated service which implies:
  • Through ticketing between modes
  • Ease of physical transfer between modes
  • Co-ordination with land use, development and re-development
  • Good road design for trams and buses
• LRTA also advocates:
  • Good facilities for the mobility-impaired, pedestrians and cyclists
  • Appropriate traffic management to maximise benefit of tramways
  • Heavy to Light rail conversion where suitable
  • The use of TramTrain where appropriate. See TramTrain policy document
• LRTA will publicise its policy by:
  • Lobbying politicians at all levels
  • Support to members
  • Publications including a monthly magazine
  • Historical and overseas research to learn lessons from others’ experience
  • Co-operation with like-minded organisations
