Hudson Bergen Line opens

On Saturday (15th April) the seven-mile Hudson Bergen light rail line opened to passengers. The line which serves 12 stations from 34th Street in Bayonne to Exchange Place in Jersey City. The fare is USD 1.50 one way and USD 13 for a book of 10 tickets. A monthly pass giving unlimited rides costs USD 53 which can also be used on the buses.

New Jersey Transit estimates that 9,000 passengers a day will use the system at first. The frequency of operation will vary from every 7 minutes to 15 minutes depending on the time of day. The system will operate weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sundays and holidays from 6 a.m. to midnight.

The line was built by a consortium of private companies called 21st Century Rail Corporation, led by Raytheon.

It is hoped to extend the line farther north to Hoboken by mid-2002 at a cost estimated as USD 1.1 billion, with possible further extensions to Ridgefield by the end of the decade.
