Eastside Los Angeles LRT approved

By a vote of 11-0, the board of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has given the go-ahead for construction of a six-mile, USD760 million light rail line from Union Station downtown through Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights to the Eastside of Los Angeles.

By approving a final environmental study and asking the Federal Transit Administration to deliver funding already promised. Although plans for a subway to Eastside was previously rejected approximately a mile of the light rail line will be underground in an area where streets are congested. It is expected that construction will begin in 2003 and be completed by 2005.
