Barcelona chooses trams again

Even before its first new tram system has opened (the Trambaix network with its 19 Citadis trams is due to carry passengers in 2003), Barcelona Metropolitan Transport Authority has awarded a contract for the Besós tramway project, a 14-km line from Estació de Nord (the city's coach station) to RENFE station Sant Adria de Besós. The EUR 200 million contract has been awarded to the TramMet consortium, comprising 13 companies, including Alstom and CGEA Connex. Alstom will supply 18 Citadis low-floor trams for EUR 46 million, as well as system engineering of the electro-mechanical package. The line is due to open in March 2004, and will be followed in January 2005 by a second line, from Badalona to Ciutadella. The second tramway network of Barcelona will be completed at a later date by a third line from Eastació de Nord to Gorg metro station.
