Merseytram legal action

Merseytravel has lost its High Court legal battle to prove that the government broke the law by pulling GBP170m of funding promised for Merseytram. Despite being refused leave to appeal Merseytravel is still planning to go to the Court of Appeal to save the trams.

It has been claimed that transport and regeneration plans in the city could be set back by at least five years after the High Court verdict on the tram scheme, It is also claimed that the ruling could spell the demise of passenger transport authorities, which were set up to ensure that transport plans considered the needs of the whole region rather than have local authorities considering their own requirements in isolation.
