US budgets USD1.5 billion for major transit projects
President Bush has sent a 2007 budget to Congress for approval providing multi-year funding for 28 projects including 13 light rail, six metro, two commuter rail and one Bus Rapid Transit:
- DENVER West corridor light rail USD35 million (total project USD593 million);
- PORTLAND South corridor light rail USD80 million (total project USD557.4 million);
- WASHINGTON STATE Beaverton-Wilsonville commuter rail USD27.6 million
(total project USD117.3 million);
- DALLAS North-west-South-east light rail USD80 million (total project
USD1.4 billion);
- SALT LAKE CITY-OGDEN commuter rail USD80 million (total project USD611.7 million);
- NEW YORK Long Island Railroad link to Grand Central terminal USD300
million (USD7.78 billion);
- PITTSBURGH North Shore light rail USD55 million (total project USD393 million).
There is USD102 million for preliminary funding for additional new projects which may include:
- NEW YORK Second Avenue subway (USD4.9 billion);
- WASHINGTON Metro extension to Dulles Airport (USD1.8 billion);
- NORFOLK light rail (USD203.7 million);
- SEATTLE University Link light rail (USD1.7 billion);
- WASHINGTON Metro Largo extension rolling stock (52 cars).
Existing full-funding grant agreements will receive further grants for 2007:
- PHOENIX light rail USD90 million (USD1.4 billion);
- LOS ANGELES light rail USD100 million (USD898.8 million);
- DENVER South-east corridor light rail USD 80 million (USD879.3 million);
- CHICAGO Metro Ravenswood Line extension USD40 million (USD529.9 million);
- CHARLOTTE light rail USD70.7 million (USD426.8 million);
- HUDSON-BERGEN (NJ) light rail USD100 million (USD426.8 million);
- SEATTLE Central Link light rail USD80 million (USD2.44 billion);
- OCEANSIDE-ESCONDIDO light rail USD684 000 (USD351.2 million);
- SAN JUAN Tren Urbano metro USD2.7 million (USD2.25 billion);
- CLEVELAND Euclid Corridor bus rapid transit USD693 000 (USD168.4 million).
