Light Rail News: Index 2006 > Istanbul's new tramline; 18 September 2006 |
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan joined the Governor of Istanbul to inaugurate the city's latest tramway extension on 14 September, and drove the first tram. The 5.1-km line links Zeytinburnu and Bagcilar via Gungoren and construction work on the TRL 55 million project started in January 2004. The line is worked as an extension of the existing tramway service between Kabatas ferry terminal and Zeytinburnu, where there is interchange with the Aksaray light rail to the airport. At Kabatas the tramway offers interchange with the new funicular up to Taksim (terminus of the metro line to Levent).
