Gold Coast progress

In Queensland, Australia, construction of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit system is expected to start later this year following the appointment of a consortium to build and operate the AUD 1 billion service. Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that GoldLinQ, which includes companies Keolis, Downer EDI, McConnell Dowell, Bombardier and Plenary, had been awarded the tender for the new service which will be delivered through a public-private partnership.

The project has secured funding commitments totaling AUD 949 million from federal, state and local government for stage one, which will include 16 stations. Passenger services are scheduled to start in 2014. Possible extensions could see the light rail system extended as far as Coolangatta, on the New South Wales border.

To cater to the city's large surfing culture the vehicles will have specially designed surfboard racks.
