The tramway operator in the German city of Karlsruhe has ordered 25 new low-floor trams (with two options, each for a further 25). The contract for the first 25 is worth EUR 75M and has been placed with Vossloh-Kiepe, which will build the trams in Spain with electrical equipment supplied from Germany. The 37.5m trams will accommodate 104 seated passengers and up to 120 standing. First delivery will be in October 2013. Arrival of the new trams will mean the withdrawal of the last classic articulated cars from the 1970s.
The Swiss city of Basel has announced its intention to place a CHF 220M order for 60 new trams with Bombardier, which will deliver its Flexity 100% low-floor model in two lengths: 45 will be 43.2m long and 15 will be 31m. There is an option for a further 51 trams. Delivery will start in late 2013, with most arriving in 2014-16. The 60 new trams for the city system will enable 101 older cars to be withdrawn, including the last Swiss Standards and classic Duewags.
Siemens will supply 40 Avenio 100% low-floor trams to Den Haag operator HTM after an appeal by the unsuccessful bidder CAF was rejected by the courts. The 35m double-ended trams with a 2.65m wide steel body will be delivered in 2014-15 and the EUR 144M order represents Siemens return to marketplace success after the troubles with its previous Combino design. Each tram will accommodate up to 238 passengers, with 70 seated.
