With the announcement of the second phase of HS2, the high speed rail lines to link London with the north, have come a number of possible suggestions to link the proposed out of town stations to the city centres.
In Sheffield where it is proposed that the station be sited at Meadowhall some 3 miles from the centre it has been proposed to link it by a new Supertram route from Meadowhall through the Sheaf Valley with stops at Heeley, Nether Edge, Millhouses, ending at Dore. The suggestion is for the tram tracks will be built along the railway to cause minimal disruption. An alternative option would see expansion of the Sheaf Valley railway and high-frequency local stopping trains introduced.
In Nottingham where the proposal is to site the station at Toton not far from the under construction NET phase 2 Tramlink extension a link from the intended terminus at Toton to the HS2 site is under consideration.
In Derby, although some were still hopeful of seeing the HS2 station sited in Derby, business leaders have demanded that the Government invests in a tram link from Derby to Toton, warning that the project could fall flat if there is no Derby connection.
