Memphis tramway operation suspended

The heritage tramway service operated by MATA in Memphis, TN, was suspended indefinitely from 11 June, and replaced by bus operation. The temporary closure comes after MATA received a report from the American Public Transportation Association into the condition of the tramway operation.

The report was commissioned after two fires on ex-Melbourne W2 trams used on the Madison Avenue line. It concluded that whilst the infrastructure was in good condition, the trams needed complete rebuilds before they could operate safely. This applied to not just the ex-Melbourne cars, but also to the former Porto two-axle trams used on the Main St line that was opened 21 years ago, and the newer Riverfront line.

MATA has a total of 15 trams, which carried 1.3M passengers/year, and will decide in the next three months on whether it can afford the complete renovation of the fleet to permit resumption of operation.
