Sheffield tram-train delay

A new date of early 2017 hsa been announced for the delayed tram-train project. The GBP60m project, which was originally announced in 2009, has been delayed several times, with the most recent target of spring 2016 being scrapped last month due to design work complications. A new timetable for the project has now been revealed, following the Sheffield City Region devolution deal recently announced by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg which included a Government commitment to support the scheme.

When the pilot scheme start there will be three Tram Train services each hour from Parkgate Retail Park in Rotherham, via Rotherham Central Station. The train will join the existing Supertram network at Meadowhall South and continue to Sheffield city centre. The pilot will run for an initial two years, with a view to making the route permanent. Tickets will be fully integrated with Supertram.

A consultation on the proposals for work on the tramway at Meadowhall is expected to take place early next year.
