Göteborg (Gothenburg) orders new trams from Bombardier/Vossloh

Following the resolution of legal challenges from unsuccessful bidders, Göteborg Tramways, the public tramway operator in Sweden's second city, has placed a EUR 140M contract with a consortium of Bombardier and Vossloh for the supply of 40 Flexity single-ended 100% low-floor trams.

There is an option for a further 60 cars. Two pre-series vehicles will be delivered in 2019, and the remainder in 2021-2025. They will be a mixture of 29m and 33m trams (numbers to be decided), with the design having the capability of being extended by the addition of further sections to a maximum of 45m. The trams will be designated M33.

GS operates a fleet of 263 trams on its 82km network, and the latest are 65 AnsaldoBreda Sirio which date from 2004-2009, About 108M passengers/year are carried. The initial contract is worth EUR 97M to Bombardier, with the remainder to Vossloh for the electrical equipment.
