Light Rail News: Index 1999 > Manchester Metrolink extension plans; 24 March 1999 |
It has been announced that transport chiefs in Greater Manchester are looking at the possibility of building the proposed Metrolink extensions all in one go. Although the Oldham and Rochdale extension remains the top priority the Authority believes that plans to build the Ashton, South Manchester and Airport lines would be greatly speeded up by adopting this Single Contract approach. It also believes that this method would accelerate the achievement of its strategic objectives and help achieve the government’s objectives as set out in the White Paper. It is estimated that a further 6.4 million car journeys per year could be replaced if these extensions were realised.
