Sheffield extension proposed

Stagecoach Supertram is discussing the funding of a feasibility study for an extension to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital with the Passenger Transport Executive. Although public money would be needed for the study it is understood that the estimated GBP10 million cost of the extension would be funded by Stagecoach itself. No extra vehicles would be required with the service being operated as an extension of the Herdings route. Since Stagecoach took over the system, ridership has increased to over 10 million passengers per annum and the operating deficit has been halved. It is expected to break even in two years time.

Brian Lomas, LRTA Development Officer comments

With this extension serving several other hospitals beside the Royal Hallamshire it should provide a further boost to the system and help to overcome the unfair criticism it has had to endure.
