Salt Lake City - Opening date announced

The Utah Transit Authority board have decided that the 15 mile light rail line will open in December. The opening ceremony will take place on Saturday December 4th. with normal service starting early on Monday 6th. This starting date is considerably earlier than had originally been estimated, but is still dependant on receiving a certificate of railroad safety from the state and also, as part of the track is used by a freight operator, obtaining a waiver from the Federal Railroad Administration.

The 15 mile line, named TRAX (for TRansit eXpress), runs from the Union Pacific railway station eastwards to Temple Square and then south through Main Street and finally reaching Sandy Civic Center via the UPRR right of way. The line will be operated by a fleet of 23 Siemens SD-100 cars.
