Stadler Variobahn for London completes successful test run in Chemnitz
One of the six Stadler Variobahn trams which will be running in Croydon from spring 2012 has successfully completed its test run and will shortly be delivered to London.
The Variobahn had already undergone additional test runs on the premises of Chemnitzer Verkehrs- AG (CVAG) in late 2011.
It is expected that the first tram will be delivered to Croydon in mid-January for driver training.
The trams are 100% low floor in 5 sections with seats for 72 and standing for a further 134. With a width of 2,650 mm and length of 32,370 mm, a top speed of 80km/h the trams also are fitted with air conditioning for drivers and passenger compartments.
It is now understood that the first vehicle numbered 2554, carrying on the numbering scheme of London trams as per the Bombardier vehicles already in service, actually arrived in Croydon in the early hours of Monday 9th January.
